My journey here

Hello everybody, my name is Myra and I would like to introduce myself a bit. This year I am one of the volunteers in Familija. It is the two of us this year. We are both working on BLOK and PUM-O+. At the moment we are switching places every other week. I like it a lot because it gives a lot of variety and gives me the opportunity to learn as much as possible. BLOK is an after school center where kids come to enjoy their free time and to make their homework. Our job there is to make cool and fun workshops and activities to entertain them. In PUM-O+ we have youngsters who are having some struggles with their career goals and we are trying to guide them in the form of project learning. Our role there is to assist the mentors and to support the youngster in their journey. Both projects give me a lot of satisfaction and I feel like I can contribute. However there is still a lot to learn and I am very eager to see what more these projects entail.

Now a bit more about myself. I live by the quote “flowers of happiness must be planted by oneself”. I like to think that I am a positive person and I would like to make a positive impact on others. I decided to go for a project in social work because I wanted to go outside of my comfort zone. I am a pharmacist in Belgium and I wanted to see if I could do more than just that. So I took on the challenge of volunteering in the hopes it would open a new view of the world for me. I chose Slovenia because I did my university exchange here and I fell in love with the country. The nature is amazing and the people are so nice. I feel at home here. Škofja Loka seems like a fairytale city to live in. It so quiet and peaceful, but there is still a lot of things happening.

In my free time I like to go for walks or being creative. The next goal is to master crocheting. But during the weekend you can also find me hanging around with friends or just enjoying a good book. I love to travel and I would love to see more of the Balkan. Also in winter I am also not afraid of some slopes to ski down from. But the thing that makes me the happiest is a campfire on a warm summer eve. I am also an animal lover. At home I have 2 cute doggies, whom I miss very much.

Last week we went on a training with volunteers all over Slovenia! We met so many great people there! This all makes me even more excited to continue my journey here!

Volunteering in Škofja Loka

Hi, everyone! My name is Carlotta and I’ll be volunteering here in Familija for a year.

I’m really excited to be in a calm, peaceful place such as Škofja Loka, a lovely city surrounded by amazing nature. I’m volunteering in both Blok and PUM-O+ every other week and I think it’s nice because I have the opportunity to meet lots of people and learn many different things about social work. And also the people working there are really friendly.

Living and working in another country is a great chance to discover yourself, which sometimes can be hard but hey, that’s part of the process! I think it will be good for me to have such a quiet environment around that helps me to focus on personal growth too. The nature here is great, you can easily go to the forest on foot and the landscapes are beautiful. For me this is the best way to take a break from everything I had going on in Italy, the country I’m from, and to connect with myself a bit more. Always having new people around allows you to develop different perspectives and understandings about humanity, and I think that’s a really valuable thing to take into consideration. Sometimes it can be challenging to temporary “lose” your life routine, but it can also be a great occasion to completely reschedule your time and discover new things about yourself.

The one who I miss the most? Obviously my dog Tilda.
