Hi everyone!

I’m Simona from Italy, and I’m one of the three (soon to be four!) volunteers here at Familija.

I graduated with a degree in psychology just a few months ago, and as one chapter closed, I was finally able to open a brand new one. It’s a completely new journey that has nothing to do with theories, textbooks, or that “mad and desperate” study grind. Instead, it’s a path that asks me to roll up my sleeves and get active—creating and doing with both my mind and my hands. And honestly, finally!!!

Despite the fear of starting from scratch, leaving my places and my people, I really felt the need to experience something completely different from my usual routine. I’ve always lived in cities, and in all of them I was just a stone’s throw from the sea, but I chose Škofja Loka. “Why?” people are still asking me… well, there is just something so calming about the nature I see around me every single day on my way to work and that is more than enough of an answer for me.

However, what first caught my eye was the variety of projects Familija offers. I chose Kids in Action because it perfectly aligns with my values. I truly believe we need to start with the youth to change and build something better, and that’s why I feel that working in the social sector with young people is my true calling. Providing them with positive spaces where they can be themselves and discover new passions can really be the key.

Right now, I’m based at MDC BLOK, an after-school center where kids and teenagers enjoy quality free time, fun games, and all kinds of art, cultural, and sports workshops—instead of spending the whole afternoon at home, maybe in solitude, and glued to their phones.

As for my own interests, I’m a big fan of cinema (thanks Familija for the magical projector), reading (thanks Škofja Loka for being so cozy and reading-friendly), traveling, and learning about new things and people.

I’m pretty sure this experience will be amazing!

Fingers crossed!!!
